If you are starting out in the auto repair business as a tech then at minimum now you probably would at least want to get a MS906BT.As  a DIY selfer and enthusiast a DS808 would be about all you realistically would need, and give you quite a bit of bi- directional active tests and even  key programming for some cars. I know my old DS708 could read door switch status in live data.I would expect a DS808 would still be able to do same. I can't say with certainty it still would. After the Ford lawsuit against Autel and later introduction of the MaxiSYS if some of the original Flagship DS708 capability still exists on the newer DS808 replacement.
